The TUG MA-50 is a four-wheel baggage tractor rated at 5,000 lb of drawbar pull. Airlines, FBOs and ground handlers use it to tow baggage carts, ground power units and service carts across the ramp. This guide covers what to check before you buy, rent or lease one. It uses the TUG MA-50 in stock at Victory GSE as the example.

Quick answer: Before you buy a TUG MA-50, confirm its 5,000 lb drawbar pull covers your heaviest cart train. Check the engine and hitch setup against your fleet, then test the brakes and steering under load. Measure it against your ramp, and decide whether buying, renting or leasing fits your schedule best.

What Is the TUG MA-50?

The TUG MA-50 is the 5,000 lb drawbar pull model in Textron GSE’s TUG MA baggage tractor line. The “50” in the name reflects that rating. Textron’s current MA sell sheet lists four ratings from 3,000 to 6,000 lb. It also lists a governed top speed of 15 mph (Textron GSE, 2026).

The MA series has worked US ramps for decades, so many crews already know it. A familiar tractor is easier to train on and easier to find parts for. Textron’s MA page lists regional types such as the Dash 8 Q400, CRJ and ERJ families under aircraft compatibility.

MA Series Drawbar Pull Ratings Compared

Drawbar pull is the towing force a tractor can apply at its hitch, and it is the first spec to check. Textron publishes these ratings for the current MA line:

Model Drawbar pull Gross vehicle weight
TUG MA-30 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) 3,750 lb (1,701 kg)
TUG MA-40 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) 5,000 lb (2,268 kg)
TUG MA-50 5,000 lb (2,268 kg) 6,250 lb (2,835 kg)
TUG MA-60 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) 7,500 lb (3,402 kg)

Source: Textron GSE MA sell sheet, Rev. 0926. A 5,000 lb rating suits cart trains, GPUs, lav carts and water carts on most commuter and narrow-body turns. Loaded ULD dollies or larger aircraft call for a bigger tractor or a pushback tractor.

Ramp task Fit for a TUG MA-50
Baggage cart trains on commuter and narrow-body turns Core use
Repositioning GPUs, lav carts and water carts Core use
General ramp and hangar utility towing Core use
Moving light commuter aircraft Only within the aircraft maker’s towing limits

Check Fuel and Emissions Rules at Your Airport

Fuel type matters more at some airports than others. If your airport is in an air-quality nonattainment area, ask the airport authority about fuel and emissions rules first. The FAA’s VALE program had funded 141 low-emission projects at 58 airports as of October 2023 (FAA, 2023). Local rules vary, so check before you pick gasoline or diesel.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist

A hands-on check tells you more than a spec sheet. Run the tractor cold, warm and under a real load before you commit. Ground damage costs the industry almost $5 billion a year and could reach nearly $10 billion by 2035 (IATA, 2022). Brakes, steering and hitches deserve the most attention.

  • Hours and records: ask for the hour meter reading and any records that come with the unit.
  • Cold start: the engine should start cleanly and idle smoothly with no warning lights.
  • Transmission: shift through forward and reverse, and listen for slipping or hard engagement.
  • Service brakes: stop with a loaded cart train at working speed. The tractor should track straight.
  • Park brake: hold the tractor and a loaded train on a slight incline.
  • Steering: check for excess play and smooth lock-to-lock travel.
  • Hitches: inspect pins and jaws, and confirm hitch height matches your carts.
  • Lights and safety gear: test headlights, tail and stop lights, beacon, horn and seat belt.
  • Leaks and tires: look under the tractor after a run, then check tread and sidewalls.

Check Dimensions and Ramp Fit

A baggage tractor has to fit your ramp, your cart rows and your parking area. Measure your tightest turn between cart rows against the MA-50’s turning radius in the table above. Check door and bay heights too. A cab adds 18 inches of height, but it keeps crews working through rain, cold and heat.

Towing Aircraft With a TUG MA-50

A TUG MA-50 can move some light aircraft, but the aircraft maker’s towing limits decide what is safe. Check the aircraft maintenance manual for towbar, weight and turning limits for each type. The FAA’s Advisory Circular 00-65 tells operators to train ground crews on published towing procedures. For heavier aircraft, compare our used pushback tractors instead.

Buying, Renting or Leasing a TUG MA-50

Victory GSE offers the TUG MA-50 for sale, rent or lease. Pick the deal that matches how you use the tractor. Buying suits operators who run a tractor every day for years. Renting covers short-term needs, such as a seasonal peak, a new route or a tug that is out of service.

Leasing spreads the cost over time and keeps cash free for other equipment. Many operators mix all three. They own their core tractors, then rent or lease extra units for busy months. Tell us how long you need the tractor and how hard it will work. We will suggest the option that fits.

Questions to Ask Before You Request a Quote

A few answers up front speed up the quote. Have these ready:

  • What is the heaviest load or cart train the tractor will tow?
  • Will it tow aircraft, and which types?
  • Do you need front and rear hitches, and at what height?
  • Do you need a cab for weather?
  • Do you want to buy, rent or lease, and for how long?
  • Where will the tractor be delivered?
